Prepping Airsoft Mauser for Han Solo Blaster

Prepping Airsoft Mauser for Han Solo Blaster

For years, I've wanted a squeamish, all-metal replica of Han Solo's DL-44 blaster. MyEmpire Strikes Back version is all metallic except the scope and piston greeblies (the pistons were plastic on-screen too), just myA New Promiseversion is resin and styrene. Later seeingSolo: A Star Wars Story 3 times last calendar week, I really decided now was the time. And then I jumped out into the replica prop online world to see what was currently bachelor.

There take been some overnice, licensed pieces produced over the years from companies like Main Replicas, but e'er in express editions at premium prices ($400+).

So, when I saw this one in the $200.00 range, I did some research on the Replica Prop Forum, and information technology turns out this blaster is decently accurate for the money, and it'southward really possible that i of these was used (with some modest modifications) equally the on-screen blaster inSolo: A Star Wars Story. And so, I jumped on it.

It came yesterday, and I have to say, I love it. It is indeed (most) all metal, with the merely plastic being the grips and the cooling coils/fins at the forepart. The telescopic is functional (although not magnified), and here's the all-time part – it'due south a fully-functioning airsoft pistol!

The blaster is powered not by Tibanna Gas, but past "light-green gas" which you can buy from airsoft suppliers – it'south substantially propane with some silicone lubricant in it to proceed the moving parts of the gun moving freely. I just happened to have some light-green gas left over from my airsoft "phase" – how convenient.

Being all metallic, the blaster's got a nice heft to it, weighing in at about two pounds, 11 ounces (without ammo). The included magazine holds 11 6mm plastic airsoft BBs, and also contains the chamber for the gas (common in dark-green gas airsoft guns). The blaster is a "blowback" pistol – meaning that it functions much like a existent firearm – the slide cycles later each shot, loading the next BB into the chamber and cycling the hammer. When you fire the last circular, the slide locks back, like a existent firearm.

The Base of operations Airsoft Broomhandle does come with a minor black metallic piece that you can install in the magazine instead of loading it with BBs, allowing you to "dry out fire" the gun.  A drawback – I've not found a slide release switch on the blaster – I'm not certain if the real Mauser Broomhandle had one. Then if you lock the slide dorsum, the but manner to get it to release is by reloading or installing the adapter piece in the magazine.

The blaster has a select fire switch to select from semi-automated (fires as fast every bit you tin pull the trigger) to total auto. Unfortunately, this select-fire switch is the large inaccuracy in the gun. The original on-screen equalizer was built on the C96 Mauser Broomhandle, which didn't have a total auto fashion. These base airsofts are based on the M712, a afterward version that had a total auto manner. While it'south confirmed that both the blaster fromThe Forcefulness AwakensandSolowere built on airsoft guns, this select fire switch seems to have been removed from the screen-used props, in club to make them appear more like the original trilogy base guns. The equalizer also features a working safety lever, like the existent Mauser.

The blaster comes in "kit form" – including the base of operations Mauser pistol, telescopic, scope mountain, and combo flash hider/bull barrel. The base gun is all prepped for conversion, with the proper holes already drilled and tapped to mount the scope mount. The only difficulty is that there was paint/powder blanket in the threads of both the holes and the screws, so it took a piffling work to become things to spiral together. Overall nonetheless, I had the blaster together in most xv minutes, with one tool (a hex driver for the screw on the wink hider).

The wink hider/bull barrel is designed to slip right over the stock barrel of the Mauser, and so y'all don't fifty-fifty need to remove the factory-installed, federally-required orangish tip to catechumen the gun.

Orangish tip still in place

Compared to the on-screenA New Hopeversion, there are some inaccuracies. The screen-used bull-butt is flat on the bottom, and this one isn't. The screen-used bull-barrel also fits a bit more affluent to the body of the gun, whereas this i installs over top of the stock barrel, leaving a bit of a gap. I recollect the scope might be a touch longer, and the windage knob on top of the scope seems a flake likewise tall. Of class, the base airsoft gun itself might be a fleck besides thick at the magazine area, but I can't exist sure as I don't have a real Mauser to compare against (but it is thicker than my Denix metallic replica that myESBblaster is congenital on). There are a couple of particular pieces (referred to as greeblies) missing from the top of the bull-butt, but several makers offer these for around $12 – $15 (including Todd'southward Costumes).

Overall, considering it would price near twice as much to purchase a Denix replica Mauser and custom-machined conversion parts, or pick up the blaster that Todd'south Costumes offers, this is a smashing replica DL-44 blaster. And hey, if information technology turns out that they did use one of these inSolo, that will exist the icing on the cake.

The overall cease on the blaster is overnice – in fact, probably besides squeamish. It's going to need a piffling weathering before it really looks like the sidearm of our favorite scoundrel.
